Sony Overhyping PS3 Cost?

CNN Money seems to think it's possible. They cite the PSP's much touted price rumor that turned out relatively false (even if many retailers managed to spike it with bundles) and the timing of Sony's release. My guess? Sony probably won't hit the traditional $300 point. In fact, there's little reason to now. I'd guess they go for below $400 for the main unit and an reasonable bundle being under $600.

Then again, Sony hasn't been shy of trying to sell high cost consumer electronics in the past, and Microsoft assuredly isn't making the 360 expensive because they want it to be expensive. Like all good things, we'll just have to wait and see.

We'll see. Sony may hold all the cards. Everyone thinks the PS2 outsold the Xbox because it came out first. If that's the case, why didn't the Dreamcast outsell the PS2 (many people waited for the PS2 over the Dreamcast). The longer Sony waits to announce the costs, the lower they will be. I could see announcing on 360's launch day that the PS2 will be about $300 out the door. It would make it tough to buy a 360 out of the gate.

Though, you figure by Christmas 06, the 360 will have had a price drop (I figure $375 for the harddrie and system, maybe with a game). So, if Sony has the same cost out of the gate, they could be in trouble.
