Ars Technica gives a brief rundown of Creepy & Cute Parts Pack and a Space Stage expansion for EA's Spore.
Nobody is exactly surprised at this move - it's EA and the guy who made The Sims so the math was pretty obvious. Sadly I don't think either are destined to exactly reinvigorate my interest in the game. Oh, I might hop back into the game from time to time but there's an odd lack of variety to the gameplay (outside of the Creator itself) and the space stage doesn't need an expansion, imho, it needs a rewrite.
I hold out some hope that future expansion will give the twist, update or improvement the game deserves - and I may be judging the space on too quickly. Just have to wait and see.

Spore To Get Expansions, Lack Of Shock Thunders Nothing

We've been getting a lot of mileage out of Spore in my family because my oldest kid thinks it is the best game ever made.
I'm enjoying it too - but I largely agree with the criticisms. The early stages are pretty shallow. Generally, the gameplay feels like a base to put the creation utilities on rather than the other way round. I don't get a whole lot of time to play games at the moment so a casual game with a little "gamer" appeal is a reasonable fit for me.
I don't think the parts pack will be bringing much to the table and I find it hard to believe I'd get that (although my boy may save up pocket money to get it if he's still this excited about the game by then).
The mission creator in the Space stage has a lot of potential in theory for user-created content. Jury's still out, of course.
